I work primarily with, remedial students grades 6-8 to improve their overall reading skills. We have been on the NY State SUR (School Under Review) list. Despite the fact that my students come from a low income, disadvantaged neighborhood, they have a great deal of potential. After years of struggling and striving to raise achievement levels, many lack confidence in themselves and their abilities. In an attempt to combat that AND make learning more interesting, I created several "Book" Groups this year to supplement our skills classes. Upon the recommendation of a former student, we decided to read The Hunger Games. Our A.P. made that possible by personally funding our first set of books. I have never seem my kids so engaged and motivated - they are reading on their own at home and our discussions have been seriously thought provoking. Several kids went ahead of the group and have already finished the book, others not in the group are asking to join! My kids are SMILING
