Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach within a wonderful, loving community of students, teachers and parents. Many of our students come from families who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. This statistic does not define us. Our kids are mathematicians, authors, scientists, engineers, artists, programmers, historians, peacekeepers and peer mediators. Most of all, we are a community of learners who values and loves each other.

The children in my class are passionate, resourceful members of the community who truly care about the importance of being problem solvers, having integrity and helping others.

My goal for this project is to create a love of learning and reading within my 5th-grade students. To help in this process, I would like to have a few book sets to start "book clubs," where groups of students are reading the same book at the same time. I would also like to have a kidney table to make conferring with my students in their book clubs easier.

Right now, I don't have multiple copies of books, and the books that I do have are all financed through my personal money.

Books have the power to encourage students while at the same time enlighten our readers of the truths about lives they don't live.

Diverse books are important because they teach our students about others and validate their own lives. Books can help promote respect and empathy for all types of people. Reading can help children develop stronger comprehension, better writing and spelling skills, and more confidence and motivation. It can also help them increase their general knowledge, and connect events and topics from around the world to their own experiences
