My Students

I teach two classes of 8th graders Gateway to Technology: Medical Detectives each semester. In this class, students learn about careers in Biomedical science and how technology helps with diagnosis. One of our units teaches the student about issues that effect the human brain by analyzing parts of the brain. Middle School students are very visual learners and hands on learners. My students would love to have the opportunity to dissect brains for a better understanding of the parts of a brain.

The greatest area of need in our class is access to sheep brains for dissection and analysis.

As our program expands our budget does not provide the money to purchase all materials. The sheep brains would allow the students the hands on learning and not just seeing the images on a computer. Sheep brains have many features of human brains to help the students make better connections.

My Project

Due to high costs of consumables, I cannot purchase brains this year for my students. The sheep brains would allow me to continue to teach the Medical Detectives unit and provide hands on learning for my students.

My students will have a unique opportunity to see the parts of the brain up close.

Students can compare the sheep brains to human brains. They will also use this information to solve medical issues involving the brain with “mystery patients.”

Hands on learning is always better in middle school. The sheep brains will allow the student this interaction while working in teams to dissect and identify parts. Who knows, maybe the brains will inspire tomorrow’s surgeon.
