Shedding Light on Chemistry, Astronomy and Physics

My students need 5 different spectrum tubes and a power supply to help them understand how scientists use light to gather information about the stars and universe.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Simkins's classroom raised $516

My Students

Physics and astronomy should mean more than just looking at pretty pictures on-line and memorizing the order of the planets. Our school has very few working resources for physics labs and I am eager to introduce more authentic science work into my classroom.

My students are a diverse group of high school juniors and seniors in a very small urban public school in Washington.

Most of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Most of my students speak English as their second language and they come from: Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Somalia, Gambia, Mexico and the Philipines. All of my students chose our small public school for the close knit community and caring teachers. My students are hardworking when they are inspired and motivated, they love talking to each other about their ideas and socializing too. They care deeply about their futures and each other and they are learning to collaborate in a very diverse environment. They are eager to do "real science" and get out of the classroom and into the lab.

My Project

Students will be able to view the element in the spectrum lamp through diffraction gratings and discover that each gas has a unique emission pattern. As students gather data about the emission spectra of stars they will be able to compare that data to the emission spectra they observed in their lamp. Students will be able to apply this knowledge to a deeper understanding of how scientists know what makes the stars. Armed with their deeper understanding of astronomy students can contemplate their place in the universe and their role in it. Additionally, these tubes can be used to gather real data in our school's chemistry class when analyzing the characteristics of elements.

The labs at our school are not currently equipped with any new or engaging equipment.

I hope this project will not only provide my students a window to the universe way beyond their city but also give them a chance to do "real science" and get excited by science.
