Reading can be an amazing escape for my students. It can also offer them windows into worlds and experiences they will never know. They have experienced and witnessed unspeakably awful things during their young lives.
When my students come into my classroom, they deserve to feel safe and loved, but they also deserve to see themselves in the books and media we consume.
These books will help them to do that. While reading many of these books, they will see characters like them. They can simply "be kids" for a little while and enjoy stories with which they can truly connect.
In addition, they know very little about the complex issues in our country, city, and community. Some of these titles will help them to understand their new neighbors much better.
My students love to read and these books will continue to foster that love. They will excite my students and I know they will enjoy the stories represented in these titles, from "Booked" to "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter."
