My Students

The amazing scholars I work with come from a diverse array of experiences all around the world. Our black and brown students often do not find themselves in the books we read. Research shows that students are more successful when they can see themselves in the literature. Unfortunately, most of the novels in the middle school are geared toward our white students. Students need "windows" and "mirrors" into literature- they need to see themselves in the their books.

I would love to have a classroom library that reflects the students in my classroom.

My Project

Research shows that students need to see themselves in the books they read. Without characters that look like them, they feel undervalued and that their story does not matter. Scholars who feel like their story is valid connect more to the school and community experience.

We all want to be heard and valued.

With this set of texts, my students who normally say, "I can't connect to this character because I am not a white girl", can finally find themselves as the heroine/hero in a text. If students see shared experiences in their texts, reading becomes more culturally relevant to their lives.
