My Project
Since our school district is considered a free and reduced lunch school, many of our students barely come to school with the needed school supplies. At this point in the school year, many need freshened supplies, including teachers! We have been working now for about a month without a sharpener. I have gone through three sharpeners and my husband has fixed two.
Since we do a lot of writing assignments in second grade, my students are using the sharpener often as well as I do allow them to take some pencils home to refurbish their home supplies to get homework done.
Due to this not only are my sharpeners broken at this point in the school year but I also am running out of pencils. I have been purchasing my own for a while now and will continue to do so but if I can also get some donated this would allow me to take a break in my individual purchases for a bit of time or have enough again for students who need supplies at home too. I don't want my students to not have pencils in school or at home so I make it possible for them to have the supplies to get assignments done.
Before Christmas break I saw homework completed in marker and the student told me they didn't have a pencil at home. These stories happen more than you would think and this child still continued to get the work done. If I had a larger supply to offer then these stories may not occur so often. Now that my supply is running low, there are fewer opportunities to take them home, which I hate happening.
