We would love to have a tool to sharpen our pencils quickly!!
I teach first grade at a public school in a high poverty area.
All students receive free lunch and breakfast, and most come from single parent homes. Most students are at least one to two years below reading grade level. They do not get the help needed at home, so school instruction is very critical, especially in first grade. Many of the students come from families that can not afford to purchase books or school supplies. That is why it is so important that the school environment provide the materials for a first grade classroom.
My students need a school pencil sharpener. The old metal sharpener mounted to the wall eats the pencils and it takes so much time to sharpen one pencil, we are losing classroom instruction time. There are times when we had to write with a crayon or marker because we did not have a sharpener that consistently worked. Writer's workshop would work so much better if the students had a sharp pencil to use!!
A pencil sharpener seems so simple.
It truly makes a HUGE difference in the day when the kids can come in and get right to work with a sharp pencil instead of waiting in line to use the mechanical one that rarely works. It would bring calm to the morning routine.
