This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's tough to stay sharp when you have to stand by the trashcan, grinding your pencil to a nub. Fuzzy black and white copies aren't too sharp, either, especially if you're an English Language Learner trying to learn and remember new vocabulary words every day.
These 7th and 8th grade middle school students live in a high poverty urban area of Northern California.
They attend a busy public school with nearly 700 students. One quarter of them are English Language Learners. They need targeted support to increase their proficiency levels so they can access grade-level material and be prepared for high school and college.
My Project
The electric pencil sharpener will free up student time to focus on lessons rather than creating messy pencil shavings and complaining about painful repetitive wrist injuries.
It should be easier than ever to create visuals, flashcards, and games, but try printing images out in black and white and then viewing them from across a room. You'll see that the images are completely illegible. Color laser-printed images will pop through to the back of the classroom and give students a clearer picture of new vocabulary.
Your donation will help my students spend more time on learning and less time on sharpening pencils.
You can also give them colors that pop across the room. This targeted support will help them access grade-level subject matter and be prepared for high school and college.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
