This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our 5th grade, inner-city classroom is located in a high-need community. We have 99% of our students receiving free lunch and a rather large homeless population. Our school is a "Math and Science Academy" which focuses on helping students break cycles of poverty through excellent academic and character education.
Our students have few supplies. Often times several classrooms have to share one particular supply or set of supplies to make ends meet, such as a pencil sharpener. When supplies are limited, it can stunt the learning environment in the classroom. This can cause our focus to be on the supplies that are needed, rather than learning in our classroom.
We are in desperate need of a new pencil sharpener. We need one that is durable and sturdy, and will last for many years to come so that other classes may benefit from having sharpened pencils readily available.
Your donation makes it possible for our students to come to school and be ready to learn. Your generosity will make it possible for our students to be concerned with the sharpness of their mind, not their pencil. You can make a huge difference in our classroom with your donation. Thank you!
