My Students
"The financial preparedness of our nation's youth is essential to their well-being and of vital importance to our economic future"." Ben Bernanke. Actively engaging students with hands-on learning about financial literacy will far exceed anything I can teach them from a textbook.
I teach an extremely talented and unique group of 5th graders in Kentucky.
They range from advanced program students to regular program students. Several of my students are from different countries. We are considered a school with moderate poverty, but we do not qualify for additional state and government funds. Yet, each of our at-risk students needs the opportunity to have the same resources as students at other schools. My students are eager and excited. They are creative and want to learn more. They seek knowledge on a daily basis. Through this project, I can help them become more financially literate and help prepare them for their futures. For several years I have taught the Stock Market Game in my fifth grade class. I have had a great deal of success. I had a team win first place in the state of Kentucky, and have had 2 teams win first place in our Region. I want to continue this success with my students this year, and in the years to come.
My Project
I want my students to participate in a "Shark Tank" financial literacy activity. Students will read the book Lawn Boy. The boy is a young entrepreneur navigating his way through his new business. The lessons he learns from supply/demand, markets, productivity and even investing, will help my students understand what it takes to run their very own business. To teach these particular lessons, I'll use the Virtual Economics program. The program, Virtual Economics, is a resource that will provide me with the tools needed to engaging economic and personal finance lessons using a hands-on approach relevant to how students learn in today's classroom. Once students have read the book and completed the lessons, I envision them creating their own 'businesses' and presenting their business plan using the presentation boards. They'll ask fellow classmates to invest (Shark Tank style) in their business. The Stock Market Game will give them the real-life simulation of trading in the stock market.
These materials will increase my students' financial literacy exponentially.
The book the Lawn Boy will help my students see what it takes to start a business, even at their age. They'll use all of this knowledge to create their own business and present them to the class. The use of Virtual Economics will help me prepare engaging lessons on economics. Using the Stock Market Game in my classroom will teach my students to research stocks and make wise decisions about when to buy and when to sell.
