My students need Dogfish Sharks for dissecting, as the science department budget unfortunately wasn't as vast as it usually is.. My students have a written and practical final exam, where they dissect these sharks.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My wonderful school is an overpopulated urban high school in the Title I standings with about 90% free and reduced lunch. Almost the entire school is an at-risk population, so my students have bigger worries on their plate than simply making it through the school day.
I am determined to make a difference at my school and in my class by allowing students the opportunity that other schools and students get everyday.
It is time to make them more well-rounded and have more experiences with prepare them for post-high school careers and life in general.
My Project
Although not well-funded, science classes are extremely important in the enrichment of a student's education while in secondary school. At a Title I campus, funding for laboratory experiments or science experiences is even more lacking. My students deserve more hands-on activities to prepare them for college, career trade school, or even the military, so labs are something that I strive to do more and more with each passing school year.
Not only do we discuss aquatic and marine organisms in class, but we also get to cover their adaptations and organ systems in class.
Allowing students to dissect things such as dogfish sharks makes the material more concrete, as they can literally see everything we learn in class. My students will not only be able to dissect different organisms, they will also be able to weigh and compare organ masses and stomach contents to determine cause of death or if the animal was in proper health. This is not an experience that many kiddos get to have these days!
