My students need 30 copies of this excellent book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," to learn about the fascinating and complex story of modern science, from the perspective of Henrietta Lacks and her family. They also need 3 audio versions.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high school students will devour the story of Henrietta Lacks and modern biological science, as told by Rebecca Skloot in this outstanding book. We use many current events stories to engage our students in the science of our world. This book is goes deep and is will add much texture to science.
Our students are highly motivated and deeply interested in public health and biotechnology.
They attend a public high school in a 20,000 student urban school district. Our school is very supportive of interdisciplinary work, and the "Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" offers us an exciting opportunity to break down the walls between the academic "disciplines" of English, History, Math, Science and the Arts. A further opportunity with this title is a public appearance by author Rebecca Skloot at a local university this fall! We hope to bring students to hear her speak, and meet David "Sonny" Lacks, son of Henrietta Lacks!
My Project
We want our students to read more. We carefully review new titles and pick the best, most engaging books for our students. After I read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" I realized my students would instantly relate to the Lacks family and the story. This "hook" will open up important conversations not only about biotechnology and public health, but also justice, human rights, and access to health care.
Compelling stories make school MUCH more interesting.
Rebecca Scloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" is one of the best science stories to be published in recent years. Our students deserve the opportunity to read this book. The Lacks family story will resonate, excite them about science, and be a powerful learning experience.
