Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student population is diverse with students of various income levels, ethnicity, and religions in one classroom. With a Marine air station just less than three miles away, we serve many military families originating from all over the country. This diversity presents unique challenges for our community. They have enjoyed learning about other countries and cultures in an effort to better themselves and understand those around them.
These students have the desire to succeed in their post-secondary life, but they need help acquiring the skills necessary for either college or a career.
Most of our students go on to attend college, either at the community college level or a four-year university.
My Project
After surveying my students, I realized that they don't feel or understand how what they learn at school is relevant to their lives and their communities. We need an iPad and video recording equipment to share their learning about social issues that interest them. Students will select a social issue and conduct research to determine common causes and possible solutions. Next, the students will create videos and podcasts using the technology (especially the iPad and microphone) in this project to share what they have learned at an expo.
These materials give the students more flexibility and the ability to create professional quality video and audio presentations.
Professional grade materials will help them produce professional quality products they are proud to present to their community- peers, parents, and other stakeholders!
