Sharing Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors With Middle Schoolers

Help me give my students a true Shakespeare experience by seeing "Comedy of Errors."

My Students

Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.

Our school community supports the whole student, academically, physically and emotionally.

By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.

My Project

As a middle school literacy teacher, I know how important it is to expose students to Shakespeare so that when they are expected to analyze it in high school, they have established a foundation for understanding. We read excerpts and even act out scenes, but I know that Shakespeare is meant to be heard and not read.

Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" is full of slapstick and mistaken identities, allowing my students to see the humorous side of the Bard.

When students have the opportunity to see a live performance of Shakespeare's work, the words come to life in a way that helps them to understand the play so much more than simply reading the words on a page.

Adding this experience to the better known tragedies we read in school, my students will have a broader understanding of what Shakespeare achieved over four hundred years. I find it most satisfying to help students find connections between Shakespeare and their lives today, and "Comedy of Errors" will surely provide new connections they haven't learned before.
