I work as a 9th Grade English Language Development teacher in Providence, RI. My students are all students who speak at least 1 other language. I love teaching them English every day, but love learning from them even more. My students have not only helped me learn more about language but make me laugh and proud every single day. Whether it is hearing about certain festivals that happen in the Dominican Republic or having students explain the different parts of Guatemala on a map, I am constantly in awe of all the rich information they have to share. They love to practice speaking and listening, especially. While they are faced with challenges trying to navigate the world in English every day, they handle these challenges gracefully.
Every day we start class with a check-in circle where we say how we are feeling and, every day, at least 1 of us says "inspired." I want my students to feel even more inspired to share what they know with me and others.
If they have a chance to build their confidence, even more, they can show just how excellent they are to a wider range of people in their lives.
In working with my 9th grade English Language Learners, I have noticed just how much they want to know how to pronounce things correctly. However, they often get anxious about speaking in front of too many people.
With these Digital Voice Recorders, my students would have the chance to practice speaking English at their own pace, and would also be able to reflect on their own speaking.
The recorders would also help my students see clear personal growth throughout the year. This type of motivation is especially crucial when embarking on an undertaking as challenging as learning English can be.
