My Students

Everyone has a story to tell! Imagine wanting to share one of your personal stories, but you are limited in your written language experiences. That is how many of my kindergarten students feel their first few days of school.

Our small elementary school is a part of a large school division.

The 25 kindergarten students that will enter my classroom this fall will have a wide range of experiences. Many will have had some pre-school experience, but for many this will be their first time in a school setting. Some will be able to write their name and even words or sentences, others will still be deciding which hand to hold a pencil. My goal is to develop a community of writers that enjoy telling their stories.

My Project

Students will begin by orally telling their stories and recording them on the tablets to be shared with family and friends at home or in other classes. The class will create an illustration rubric and begin drawing pictures to illustrate parts of their stories in their journals. Colored pencils will be used to add real life details to create a clear picture for the audience. Through modeled lessons, students will be shown how to label their illustrations and write their stories. Completed stories will be recorded onto tablets, using podcasts and qr codes, and shared with family and friends on the classroom blog throughout the year. Students will also have opportunities to work collaboratively on fiction and non-fiction writing projects.

Imagine how powerful these young writers will feel being able to share their stories with others!

Their drawing journals will become portfolio of their work for the year. The use of technology will mean that they will be able to collaborate with others outside of our classroom becoming confident and effective communicators!
