This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students love to see themselves in the decor around our classroom. I try to incorporate photos from our learning experiences around the room each year. Each child gets to leave for the summer with a handful of memories from our year together. Printing photos is timely and costly, but I see how much it lights up their faces and know it's worth it. A photo printer and extra cartridges will save me trips to the pharmacy's Photo Department while allowing me to continue sharing a tangible memento of our time together.
Not only do the photos act as great custom decor, they are also very educational.
When a student can connect their personal experience to a scientific phenomena, for example, they are going to have a better understanding of how and why it occurs. Just the other day, my student was having a difficult time with a new science concept. Another student reminded him of a related exploration we completed earlier in the year. As soon as he saw himself modeling the effects of erosion using cornmeal in a photo on the wall, he was able to transfer that experience to understand how barrier reefs protect shorelines from storm surges. These are some pretty cool building blocks, if you ask me!
Just as it is important for students to see themselves on the walls of my classroom, it is important to see people like them represented in literature on my shelves. This is why you'll see requests for a number of books written by Mexican-American immigrant named Duncan Tonatiuh. Students in my new school will be able to relate to Tonatiuh's background and that's important because they need to see examples of people like them who are doing spectacular things in life. They too can become award-winning authors like Tonatiuh!
