Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are a melting pot in New York City so it is likely that my students will meet people of different cultures as they grow into adults. However, they can still live in fairly insular worlds at this point in their lives, surrounded mainly by close family and friends. The curiosity is there though. From their interest in KPop to anime, they are interested in exploring other cultures. I would like to share some of my own Japanese culture with my students.

I would like to create opportunities for sharing ideas and finding similarities and making connections with their own culture and traditions.

A fun way to do this is by tasting Japanese snacks. I hope my students will enjoy this glimpse into my cultural heritage and share more of their cultures with me as well. After sharing these treats with my students, I will invite them to share some recipes and perhaps bring in some treats from their own culture to share with the class. I want to affirm every student's cultural identity to create a more inclusive classroom. Everyone should be seen and have a voice. No one should feel marginalized because they are not a part of the dominant group in this country.

When a student brings lunch from home that is different from the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches served in the school cafeteria, they should not be ridiculed. Each exposure to something different broadens my students' horizons and helps them see the beauty in diversity.
