I am a past Lead Literacy teacher who has returned to the classroom, to those who make my job the joy that it is! I teach on the south side of Chicago, at a school where 99% of our students receive reduced/free school lunches. Money is always a concern at our school, and sadly, our students sometimes pay the price of underfunding or quite simply parents who are doing the best they can, but are not always able to buy the extras, that will enrich their educational environment at home. Because of this, I am in the process of creating a classroom that can be an IDEAL place where students come to feel safe, accepted, successful and challenged! Every morning, and afternoon, my students gather on a piece of rug to learn in a community setting. I need a writing center (easel with dry erase board and chart paper) so that I may have effective group lessons involving shared and interactive writing and reading. In only 6 days of school, my class is showing characteristics of a community, encouraging and sharing with each other on a personal level while gathered on the rug. It would be wonderful if I had a center where students could better participate during the "rug time" in the advanced reading and writing that is to come! It is my hope, that because this environment and setting has already had an impact on their attention and participation, this reading and writing center will give my students an area to gather around, and put that positive learning energy to use!
