My Students

Welcome to my 3rd grade classroom! My goal is for all of my students to meet and exceed the CCSS's by the end of the school year. I hope to motivate my students to read and build confidence in unfamiliar and complex texts. I believe in supporting and challenging all students. I teach a 90 minute reading block where students have a variety of choices of working independently, in small groups, or as a whole class. I support using chapter books as a read-aloud and feel that students benefit more from whole class core instruction when they have a copy of the read-aloud in their hand.

We have wonderful families and students.

I have 22 students who range in abilities, socio economic status and ethnicity. Some students come from homes with every advantage, while some students come from homes who are struggling to meet daily needs. Parent involvement at our school is wonderful and community involvement is important.

My Project

We will be using the requested shared reading books such as Jake Drake and The War with Grandpa, as a whole class and in small groups. I have recently been introduced to the C.I.A. Approach to teaching reading. Students will have the opportunity to read and COLLECT information, INTERPRET the meaning of what they read and support their thoughts with evidence from the text, and APPLY what they have learned. Students will be introduced to complex text and get step-by-step support in managing more complex text to support independent reading. Most importantly they will improve comprehension!

Having a copy of the chapter book we are reading in the hands of each student will provide opportunities for all students to refer back to the text.

I am very excited to watch students learn to love reading chapter books from beginning to end, and to watch their love of reading grow!
