I will be teaching a kindergarten class in a title one school in Fayetteville NC. I will be teaching all subjects in this class.
This school is a very poor title one school with over 85% free or reduced lunch students. The school is very limited to what it has for teaching materials. In kindergarten students need to hear a lot of oral language through story telling, as well as sharing in the reading of books. Using big books will help my students gain a lot of good pre-reading strategies.
The big books will be used several times a day for whole group teaching. Students will learn many pre-reading strategies for example: parts of a book, one to one word match, reading for meaning, attending to first letter in word, difference between letters, words, and sentences, just to name a few. As we work whole group with these strategies I can then assess and determine which students need more intervention in small group with the big books. Eventually the big books will go into centers where the students can continue to work independently on the skills and strategies that were just taught.
Because I have chosen a varied selection of big books, I can also teach rhyming, the alphabet, numbers, colors etc. whole group and small group.
By donating these books, you will be playing a part in helping all of my students to succeed in reading and writing as well as many other concepts that these young students need to learn.
Thank you
