I am a second grade teacher in Redwood City, California. Soon, I will have to teach my students geometry shapes. In their math books, students get to see plain flat pictures of 3-D shapes. In order to truly understand the concept of geometry shapes, it helps to be able to actually hold and examine spheres, cylinders, cones, etc. Then students will also have a much better understanding of what the math unit is all about and how they see these shapes in their everyday lives. In order for my students to learn these 3-D shapes, it would be great to give each of them the opportunity to work with a set of geometric shapes.
