Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Since I can't bring my students to a stream, I want to bring the stream to the lab. One great way to help students discover how the land is shaped is to have students use clear plastic boxes with drain holes and rubber stopper so that they can construct stream tables, and then use those stream tables to conduct investigations. I am a Science teacher at a high poverty school. In North Carolina, fifth grade students need experience observing and conducting investigations that build an understanding of landforms.
I always get more bang for my buck when my students are actively involved. For every lesson, I involve the students in an interactive experience. If the lesson calls for a demonstration, I try to modify the lesson so that small groups of students can conduct the activity simultaneously.
For this project, I need materials to make stream tables. We need 1 stream table per each group of 4 students. I teach five classes, and I need sets of stream tables for each class. That is a lot of stream tables, but the payoff is huge. All students will be engaged in the learning process. My students report what they like most about science is the "doing" I allow them to "do". I am committed maintaining that practice in my instruction.
I love teaching, and I especially love getting students excited about learning. I know how to do it, but I need help. Contributing to this project will not only help students learn how the land is shaped, but it will also help shape young minds for the better.
