I teach in an elementary school in the Edgewater neighborhood. It is a transient area where many immigrants settle when they first arrive in Chicago from other countries. In my class this year, I have students from the Philippines, Bosnia, Russia, Albania, Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Togo, Ethiopia, Sudan, France, and Germany. The students in my class are all English Language Learners and most are quite new to the United States. My students earn a certain number of minutes throughout the week for good behavior, kindness, and compliments from other teachers, etc. The minutes go toward a free choice time where they can choose from a number of neat activities. Such as, make your own puzzle, puppet making, stencil drawing, teacher helper, board games, and many others. I spend quite a bit of time planning for it, because I want it to be meaningful time for them. I want to engender excitement in my students so that when they leave for the weekend, they cannot wait to return to school. I am hoping to buy some board games and craft supplies to have for our Friday Choice Time for the rest of the year. Thank you for any and all of your help!
