This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to 1000 students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of them receive a free lunch because of their socioeconomic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities.

Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. Ben Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Seeing the excitement in kids eyes when they learn something new, makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands on experiences as possible in school to enhance and reinforce their learning because quite frankly, there aren't many community resources outside of our walls available.

My Project

My students have been actively seeking ways to improve their health as well the health of their family members. They recently came up with the idea of having pedometers to keep track of their activity. That has been a great success, but now they have concluded that we can do more to get healthy.

Last week, a team of students came up with the idea that if we had a Wii in school, it would allow us to create an Exercise Club that will meet 3 times a week before school, and every day after school.

The materials we are asking for would make this club a great success. Many of my students are dropped off at school before we even open the gates. The parents in our community are hard pressed for time because most are holding down multiple jobs, especially if the household is a single parent one. Having this Wii and equipment would allow students to be active in the mornings when students get dropped off and wait for the bell, as well as after school, while they wait for their parents. Your contribution to our project would allow my students to be active for more than 60 minutes with the endless opportunities to become active that Wii equipment offers.

The dance games will provide my students with many different ways of having fun and exercising after school in their club, but also throughout the day, especially on days we are not allowed to go outside because of the heat, or police activity. The Balance Board and Rowing game will give them opportunities to get rid of energy and work on core muscles.
