My Project

Dear Donors,

I am excited to propose a groundbreaking addition to our annual bridge-making contest that will empower our students to understand the vital importance of engineering for structural integrity in earthquake zones.

In light of the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria in 2023 and the persistent threat of living in an active earthquake zone on the San Andreas Fault, it has become imperative to educate our young minds about the significance of creating resilient structures.

We aim to introduce a state-of-the-art vibration table, also known as a shake table, into our science department. A shake table simulates the ground motions that occur during an earthquake, enabling us to test the structural models, scaled slopes, and building components of the bridges constructed by our students. Through this experiential learning opportunity, our students will witness the realistic effects of earthquakes on their bridges, gaining a profound understanding of how structural integrity is crucial in earthquake-prone regions.

The incorporation of the vibration table in our contest will have numerous educational benefits. Not only will it foster an interest in engineering and science among our students, but it will also impart valuable lessons in teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Moreover, it will instill a sense of social responsibility as our students learn to design bridges that can withstand the devastating impact of earthquakes, ultimately contributing to safer infrastructure in vulnerable regions.
