Shake, Rattle, and... Boom? Percussion for Young Musicians

Help me give my students percussion instruments to use to explore and create music through a variety of medium.

Davisville, WV Grades PreK-2

My Project

I teach kindergarten through fifth grade music at two schools in Wood County, West Virginia. Our young musicians are eager to learn how to use a variety of instruments to create real and meaningful music experiences. These percussion instruments will primarily benefit students in K-2.

The benefit of having real percussion instruments for our youngest students is exponential- not only for their music education, but also for other content areas.

Here are just a few examples of what students will gain through the instruments:

-Students will have the opportunity to practice steady beat through a variety of medium. Steady beat is a critical skill that is the foundation of all music-making. The ability to perform steady beat has been proven to improve fluency in language.

-Students will practice counting and identifying patterns in music. This is great practice and reinforcement for concepts they are already working with in math class.

-Students will practice composing, improvising, and collaborating with one another. This encourages students to "think outside of the box" and problem solve in unique ways. Not only will students practice teamwork, but they will gain confidence in their abilities.

-Students will identify proper tone production of instruments and the science behind frequency and pitch.

-Music is a great way for students to express themselves, ease anxiety, and improve self-esteem.

Percussion instruments are a highly engaging, physical, and FUN way to make music. Having these instruments available to our K-2 students will help them develop a solid foundation of skills that benefit them in the music classroom and beyond. Students will be better prepared to tackle harder instruments as they grow, such as recorder and ukulele. Music has the power to change lives. I believe it starts with our youngest students.
