I teach Family and Consumer Science classes at an alternative high school. My main focus is to teach hands-on skills that will benefit students in their future.
What I love about my students is their desire to overcome adversity.
Some individuals were bullied in previous schools and came here to find respite. Some students are the bread-winners of their family and need a flexible school that works with their work schedule. Some will be first-generation high school graduates. Over half of our students are economically disadvantaged and cannot bring basic school supplies to school. No matter what situation they are in, they know they can come to school and feel love, appreciation, and respect.
This past school year, a student asked about a sewing class. Unfortunately, our school has limited resources, and cannot offer a sewing course. I got straight to work and a week later, a sewing machine was donated by a community member. This student jumped right in. As she learned to sew, her confidence and self esteem grew exponentially. She was so proud! Everyone needs that opportunity.
My Project
I am offering the first ever sewing class taught at our school! We are so excited to get started, but we need your help.
We need basic sewing supplies to bring our projects to reality.
One sewing machine has already been donated. I have saved up enough money in my budget to purchase 5 additional sewing machines. Fabric has been graciously donated by family, friends, and community members. What we need now is basic supplies and notions. This project will fund: thread, pins, needles, fabric shears, measuring tapes, seam rippers, seam gauges, as well as an iron & ironing board.
Beginning sewing projects we can complete include: pillow cases, zipper pouches, hand warmers, pajama pants. Students will be encouraged to bring damaged clothing items from home to repair during class.
