Sewing Machines Needed for Art School Drama Department!

Help me give my students sewing materials to partner with roundabout theatre Company to learn how to make their own period specific costumes.

My Project

Brooklyn High School of the Arts is a special place. The Drama Department is even more so. The students who walk through the drama wing are incredibly talented and are eager to learn about every aspect of theatre possible. Our studio classes teach students about all about performance and our electives are where students can expand those skill sets into aspects of technical theatre. We have a robust scene shop where students can create the sets and props of their dreams, a great black box, and an auditorium where students can learn all about lighting and sound. We have one glaringly obvious missing avenue and that is a costume shop.

Brooklyn High School of the Arts's Drama department has been growing incredibly fast over the past ten years considering what little we have to work with.

We have become one of the best places for High School kids to get a theatre education across New York City's five boroughs. We are a Title I school and we have made some absolute magic with a small amount of funding. We want to offer everything we can to our students. Starting a costume shop with a few sewing machines will have a huge impact on our students. Doing a lot with a little is the drama department's way at BHSA.

Why now? This year, we are partnering with Roundabout Theatre Company to teach kids how to construct their period-specific costumes for our upcoming production of Dark of the Moon. Having sewing machines and the beginnings of a costume shop for this residency would be incredible!
