My students are awesome! Our school is between Troost and Holmes, a dividing line in our city in terms of socio-economics. Most of our students come from the East side of Troost, where economic disparities can definitely be found. However, many of them don't allow this to affect them in any way. Some of them come from more challenging circumstances than others, but all of them work hard every day to be their best. For that reason, I try my best to provide them with enriching learning experiences to foster not only a love for learning, but an unending quest for scholarship!
Many of my students express their future aspirations and as one of their early sources of encouragement, I like to do all that I can to foster those dreams. The past few years have shown a trend in student desires to own their own businesses and many have expressed an interest in fashion or interior design. In a world where an Etsy or Instagram page can turn a small city boy or girl into a global phenomenon, what better place to learn the skill of sewing and begin to invest in one's dream than at school!
I am requesting 6 sewing machines to learn about textiles and fabrics to fuel their love for fashion and teach them entrepreneurial skills.
They all wear clothes; they all buy clothes, so for them to learn to CREATE clothes will definitely take them to a new level of learning and lifestyle! This opportunity not only gives students a chance to learn something awesome and new, but it also aligns perfectly with our school's mission to prepare students for success in college and to equip them to become leaders in society.
