Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fabulous theatre students are from all over the world, and they love learning about each others' languages and cultures. They are curious, collaborative, and creative. Together, we put on five performances a year. We have won numerous state and regional theatrical awards in both acting and technical design.

Our school is a large, urban, inner-city school that values the arts.

We offer vocal and instrumental performance, drawing, painting, graphic design, dance, and theater. Our school has a large English as a New Language population as well as Special Education. Our theatre program is all-inclusive and entirely unique to the district.

My Project

My students design and make all their own costumes for our productions. Right now we only have one very old machine for forty students to share! We would like a new machine so more kids can learn the essential skill of sewing. Kids will not only learn how to make new clothes, they can repair and repurpose old clothing! We are requesting a machine, a hard cover so it stays dust-free when not in use, bobbins so students can quickly change thread colors, and needles because sometimes learning means breaking off a few tips.

We put on five student-led productions a year.

Students do everything from stage management to lights, sound, set design and construction, and costuming. Over forty students assist with each production, and we never have enough supplies to go around. Students show their work at both the state and regional level, but we have never had a student show work in costume design because we can't teach enough people basic skills with one machine. This machine will allow kids to get a chance to show off their work and create new paths to college!
