I am the teacher of very energetic and remarkable 4th-grade students in a city with the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in our country! Our district has over 48,000 students, encompasses almost 2,000 square miles, and has more than 130 schools and programs. There are over 100 languages spoken by families in our school district.
Each morning my students walk through the door and are greeted with new opportunities to learn and to be successful.
My students are very creative and, as their teacher, I do my best to foster their learning and provide opportunities to grow as individuals. Our classroom is full of eager learners and very hard workers with ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds. Each of my students come from his or her own unique situation and home life. Every single one of my students has strengths to share, as well as room to grow academically, emotionally, and socially. We are a strong and loving classroom community that works together to ensure learning, growth, opportunities, and successes for each other.
My Project
The four machine totes I am requesting will be for our recently funded sewing machines. The two storage containers will keep all of our sewing notions and supplies neat and organized.
With today’s family dynamics of both parents working, single-family homes, and very busy lifestyles, it is difficult for parents to find the time to teach their children basic life skills, such as sewing.
Students will have the opportunity to learn the skill of sewing in our classroom rather than later in life or not at all. It will be my honor to help my students attain the skill of sewing!
Although we are in a heavily modernized society, sewing really is a necessary skill to teach children. Learning how to sew can also be beneficial by helping kids build skills in other areas in life. The precision work of sewing helps develop eye-hand coordination skills. Mathematical skills such as estimation and measurement are utilized during the planning and duration of every project. Problem-solving skills are needed when a project is short on material or the machine becomes jammed. Determination and perseverance are often necessary in order to see the project through to the end, especially if it doesn’t end up ‘going as planned’. The skill of sewing and creating projects takes planning, mental energy, and critical thinking in order to be successful.
Students will be making reusable grocery bags, pillows, pillowcases, draw-string stuff sacks, zippered pouches, applying patches, and much more. My students will make these items for those in need and as gifts.
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org and our many public education supporters, I will be able to offer my students the opportunity to learn the valuable skill of sewing. Thank you for considering our project!
