Help me give my students sewing machines and other resources for a Sewing Club that will tap into their creativity, and allow them a place of expression and connection with others.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I have the pleasure of teaching very creative students. This past year I had a student who would draw dresses in her free time and would describe to me her aspirations of being a fashion designer. I decided that I would teach her what I knew about sewing to help her get started on her dream. We met after school during the week and completed many projects including masks and a bucket hat that she was very proud to wear. There were other students who wanted to stay with us after school, however, I only had my personal sewing machine so I could only reasonably accommodate two students at a time. Even so, the students I worked with explained to me how peaceful and relaxed the process made them feel.
With the sewing machines and other materials to kickstart our Sewing Class, we will be able to create an environment where more students can make fun projects, learn patience and perseverance, learn to problem solve, and learn basic life skills.
Students will be able to express their creativity and build on their dreams. The projects we can achieve with these materials will give the students something positive to look forward to and enrich their school experience.
