My Students

My classroom is a multi-age (6-9 yrs.) learning community based on the Montessori philosophy of learning. The students contribute with their unique backgrounds; we are diverse in many ways, which helps us to learn about one another through life skills, peaceful interactions and contributions of service to others. Our school is a Title I school, including many students with particular needs. We focus on the positive and celebrate our individuality in our community.

The students love coming to school each day to see what's next.

They thrive on the freedom of expression, discovery and knowing they can make mistakes and do hard things without negative judgment. Acceptance, patience, nurturing, fun and respect are modeled daily to create a menagerie of bright minds, busy bodies and caring souls. Honestly, we are like a real family.

My Project

Preparing students for success involves the development of executive function. Learning to plan and create projects supports the development of emotional control, flexibility, persistence, metacognition, organization, planning, prioritization, self-control, tolerance for stress, focus, initiative, time management and more. Through this grant, each student will learn to use a sewing machine, measuring tools (tape measure, a rotary cutter and board), along with various types of fabrics, thread, ribbon, and buttons to make an individual quilt block while incorporating mathematics, science and technology.

The Initial project, uniquely created quilt blocks, will be sewn together to create a wall decoration to demonstrate how each unique individual student comes together (supporting social-emotional learning along with the above mentioned academic skills).

This simple activity will also serve as building blocks for increasingly more complex projects planned and created as part of our makerspace STEAM curriculum.
