Help me give my students sewing kits and swatches of fabric to learn to sew buttons and potentially create a class quilt!

We are an inner-city school with a high poverty rate and an ethnically diverse population. My students are creative and spend their days not only attending core classes like English, science, and foreign languages, but a variety of art classes like drama, Martial Arts, guitar, and photography.
Our school prepares students for college in an academically challenging, arts-integrated environment.
Not only are my students involved in extracurricular activities, but they are also dedicated to their grades. Many stay at school until five or six pm, either in tutoring or attending a club meeting. My students are well-rounded and participate in activities like volleyball, ballroom dance, basketball, cheerleading, and a variety of clubs from the Student Council to the National Honor Society and everything in between. These students commute from all around the state in search of better education and experience through an arts-integrated curriculum.
This past year has been rough. Not only have my students been apart from each other, but they've had to go through some of the most pivotal moments of their lives in a pandemic. What I see now is that their ability to connect with one another is more difficult now than it ever was. By creating an activity where they can learn a new skill together and create a piece of artwork from that, I hope that our students will make long lasting memories and learn how to connect with one another again.
In our capstone classes, we strive to provide our students with the ability to go forth into the world with as many skills to help them be productive adults as possible.
One skill that is often overlooked is simple sewing skills. Many a piece of clothing could be salvaged and used again if only the person wearing it knew how to sew a hem or attach a button or to add a patch. We want to use the sewing kits, fabric swatches, and buttons in this project to help give our students the ability to learn hands-on how to do all of that. Furthermore, we hope to take all of the swatches that students sew together and create a class quilt that will hang in our hallways as a collaborative art project. This will not only enhance their connection to their school but to their classmates. When they return to our school in 10 years, they can remember fondly on their times here and also share stories about all the buttons they've sewn since senior year.
