I would love for my students to have the opportunity to learn the life skills of knitting and crocheting. While I was in charge of bus duty on my hall, a student brought her crocheting to work on while we waited for school to begin. I was totally fascinated that a fifth grade student would be interested in such a wonderful life skill. I am an avid knitter, but have never been able to get the hang of crocheting. This student taught ME to crochet. Since Christmas, I have completed 5 afghans.
I am the Science Specialist in a low income school. We have many early morning programs for students performing below grade level. We also offer programs for students who excel. We have nothing in the early morning for average students. We could be using the time between bus arrival and the beginning of school to teach fourth and fifth grade students the life skills of knitting and crocheting.
Materials needed would include yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles, and pattern books. We have 4 fourth grade classes and 4 fifth grade classes. We should have room for 30 or so students on a daily basis. I would expect both boys and girls to be interested and participate.
These average students need to be learning a life skill instead of wasting valuable time waiting for the beginning of the school day.
