The students at our school come from many different cultural and economical backgrounds. The students are strong, hard working, intelligent, and supportive. They are enthusiastic learners, and deserve every opportunity to have the environment which will nurture their young minds.
Our school has over 80% of the students who receive free and reduced lunch.
As second grade teachers, we strive to make our classroom a safe place where they can learn and grow. When setting up our classes, we try to think of every learner and what would make them successful. This can be difficult if we do not have the resources to give them what they need.
My Project
Many of the students in 2nd grade come to school with a small jacket or no jacket at all. They are not prepared for the cold weather we have outside. I keep jackets in my class that the students can borrow for the day, but since these are shared between all of our second grade classes they go quickly everyday. Having a couple more would ensure more students getting to enjoy outside during our cold months.
Good behavior is key in keeping the classroom community a safe and engaging place where all students want to learn.
In 2nd grade, we use ClassDojo to motivate the students. They each have a monster by their name and they get points for being kind, being on task, walking in a line, etc. At the end of the week we give out tickets for every 10 points a student has. These go in a raffle to win monster toys. The students really look forward to the drawing and this is a good motivator for those students who have a hard time with their behavior.
