My students attend a Title I school in the heart of Missouri. Over 78 percent of our students participate in the free and reduced meal program. My students have limited real-life experiences. They are eager to learn and participate in adventures concerning their surrounding community and world.
Materials and activities that focus on sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell excite and enhance the learning experience for my young learners.
They enjoy daily activities that involve their gross and fine motor skills.
My Project
Dramatic play is an essential part of the developmental learning process. This type of play supports social, emotional, and cognitive development. With this project, I will build a collection of hats, masks, costumes, shoes, and book titles supporting dramatic play.
Dramatic play supports literacy.
The goal of my project is to encourage my students to develop a deeper understanding of text structure and characters from our studied stories. For example, my students enjoy the "There Was An Old Lady" books written by Lucille Colandro. These are great books to teach story structure, sequencing, and rhyming. I am requesting 3 of these book titles, an old lady wig, and a pair of eye glasses. These items will be located in the dramatic play center. Students will be invited to create scenery and reenact these stories with their peers. This learning opportunity will let my students practice communication, recalling and retelingl aspects of studied stories, and working cooperatively amongst peers.
Another favorite book study is "The Three Little Pigs." There are so many different versions of this story that with this project, I will be able to introduce to my students. I am requesting 4 different book titles (versions) of this story. Additionally, I am requesting different pig and wolf costumes. My hope is that my students will choose a story version, a character role and creatively reenact the original story!
