This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our middle school is part of the largest community school district in the Bronx and in all of New York City. Our school and community district serve the highest number of students in the entire Department of Education.
Our school has been significantly impacted by an increase in migrant students during an already challenging period, with many students reading below grade level.
Our students face difficult hardships that are worsened by the fact that they live and attend school in the poorest congressional district in the United States. This project aims to boost students' confidence, provide ways for them to demonstrate their abilities and mastery of standards, and explore, refine, and express their artistic capabilities.
Currently, our classroom lacks a pencil sharpener. This project will fund a classroom sharpener so students can sharpen their new school-branded pencils. This will help revamp the classroom and establish it as a consistent and dedicated space for Drama class.
Students need visual aids, relevant reference materials, and manipulatives/instructional materials that need to be neatly curated and protected from damage. This can be achieved through the use of a paper slicer and laminator. The potential uses for these tools are extensive.
The potential classroom improvements provided by this project will benefit our English Language Learners and students from immigrant/migrant newcomer families, as these students heavily rely on the resources listed below.
Students will benefit from a laminator, paper-slicer, sharpener, dry-erase markers, and keyboard by increasing exposure to clear and organized curricula maps that track current learning progress; handling and incorporating various instructional materials such as handouts and assessment tools; and seamlessly navigating digital resources without limitations of space and access to the smartboard, to name a few examples.
