I am a resource teacher in a Title I school in Indianapolis. All of my students are receiving special education services from the school. My class serves students with a range of disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emotional Disabilities, and Specific Learning Disabilities.
The typical student in my class is below grade level and has unique needs in order to be successful in school.
I spend my day making sure that every student is getting the attention and accommodations they need in order to be successful and happy in the school environment.
My Project
As a resource teacher, I work with students on meeting a range of goals specific to them. I will use these materials specifically to help support them in their social/emotional goals. The books selected have topics related to empathy, kindness, diversity, and calming strategies. These books will be used in social skills groups, one-on-one with students struggling, and to help students to discuss issues they may be having in school.
My students are strong and capable learners, and I want to make sure they are ready to learn when at school.
This year, my school is using a slow start to the day. This means that when students come in the morning, they will have options of tasks that are meant to help wake up the brain and get it ready to learn. I added STEM-related materials for my students to use at this time. This will allow my students to have a calming morning and awaken their brain for the day as opposed to being overwhelmed and frustrated as soon as they get to school. The Legos, building materials, and Play-Doh will be used at this time. While some students use these morning tubs, I will check in with other students and assist in any way possible.
