My students need magnetic alphabet letters and cookie sheets to put them on in order to practice sight words as well as spelling patterns.

My Students
My students attend school in Los Angeles, California. We serve a variety of students in grades TK-5th. We are a Title 1 school, which means many students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students are from many diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and are always eager to learn!
We are environmental activists!
Alongside learning to read and write, we learn about the world around us and how we can preserve the beauty of our environment on a daily basis.
We love to work together and engage in many hands on activities that make learning come to life every day in our classroom.
Most of all, we believe in ourselves!
My Project
Guided reading is a very important part of every child's educational day. It's the time when each child gets to work with their teacher in a small group, at their own individual reading level. There are many activities that can be done during guided reading. A complete guided reading lesson includes time focused on sight words and spelling patterns.
Inspired by The Next Step in Guided Reading by Jan Richardson, I have decided to implement a more complete guided reading program in my classroom to reach my students more in depth.
Part of this program includes building words with magnetic letters. I have not been able to fully implement this program due to not having these materials.
This project will allow for each student in a small group to have access to their own materials, and allow our classroom to have enough materials. The cookie sheets allow for an area for students to arrange letters and store their own set of letters for easy access without loss of instructional time looking for letters needed. These magnetic letters are also color coded. The visual of vowels being a different color than consonants will be extremely beneficial to students as they work with spelling skills such as long and short vowel sounds. During a lesson students may be asked to build a sight word we are learning, or to build a word with the spelling pattern (ex: long vowel pattern) we are learning. The magnets then allow for them to manipulate letters and sounds and notice patterns.
