Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These are some of the most joyful, interested, and resilient students I have met in my 24 years of teaching. Each of them has hardships to overcome. Here in East Harlem, NYC, many have parents looking for work constantly or working many hours. Only one student has a parent who can help them with the technological skills necessary for using the iPad during remote learning (for example, navigating to Kahoot, or signing in to an application during school hours or when parents are not available). Therefore, I have been designing lessons which do not depend upon the use of technology. Necessarily this means the use of materials at home, markers, crayons, special paper (colors), scissors, etc.

Many of my students have very little supplies at home for remote learning, yet they persevere.

They draw with their yellow-green crayon. They do their best to practice writing their letters and first sentences on paper without lines. They have GRIT! I wish for them to now have supplies.

My Project

These materials will support the remote learning of my eight Kindergarteners who are learning in both Spanish and English here in East Harlem. Three days a week, my students are learning from home and need to practice writing letters, short words and sentences. The magic board will reduce the amount of paper waste as students sound out words during phonics instruction. The sight word journal gives students the opportunity to trace the 25 essential sight words, complete sentence stems on appropriately lined paper and draw a picture. The writing journal also has the appropriate lines for practicing upper and lower case letters, a space drawing and labeling their stories and reports and they have a sturdy binding. The markers, crayons and construction paper will give the students the opportunity to add color to their creativity and expression! The foam soccer ball will support their Virtual Soccer Mondays with the New York City Football Club and get them excited about exercising at home!
