Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How hard do you think it is to organize 160 students coming through your classroom every day? Imagine trying to do this without basic resources.
My students take 7th Grade Pre-Algebra or 8th Grade Algebra I with me, even though the majority of them are still learning English.
Because of the language deficiency and our under-resourced school, all are grade levels behind in math. Despite this performance, my students are incredibly intelligent and simply in need of more support. Not only do I hope that family, friends, and other private donors will consider giving such support, I would also like to enter my classroom in the Chevron Classroom Challenge, particularly since my students and I can hear in my classroom the Chevron Emergency System. I associate those bells with Chevron's support of our schools.
My Project
Basic supplies support the basic learning required for my students to excel. Five different colors of paper (plus white!) will clearly show students the difference between classwork, homework and tracking sheets. Folders and binders will keep student work where it ought to be and not on the floor. The set of algebra tiles will give students an opportunity to touch concepts that still elude them like positive and negative numbers. Dry erase markers for a class set of mini-boards help me give constant feedback and make learning fun for the students.
My school does not provide these materials to me.
Because of resources we got last year from outside school, our school's proficiency on the state math exam increased from 10% to 26%. The more our students succeed in math, the more opportunity they will have. Every resource gets my students one step closer to success. Give them the chance of a lifetime!
