Our school is a free, public charter school in Myrtle Beach, SC. We are a small school with students who are very enthusiastic learners. The majority of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program, which identifies these students at the poverty level. We receive limited funding relying on state and federal funds, but receive no local funding. My fourth graders would benefit from these items to help enhance class projects and allow for the extension of student-created audio and visual elements in their daily learning practices.
My Project
The addition of these resources within our classroom will allow students to show their creativity and imagination to help learning come to life. Project-based learning has been the highlight of each unit that my students work through each academic year. When students are challenged to create projects that are reflective of the standards they are learning, they enter a whole new world of understanding.
Allowing students to engage and create projects that mirror what they are learning requires various materials to support each student's individual creativity.
These materials will help to support dual learning through student-created audio and visual elements. Many times students need to record their presentations or responses to learning. Having a tripod would allow for hands-free recording. The microphone will be helpful in amplifying the voices of the students so that they can be clearly heard. Dry Erase clipboards will allow the students to have a place to keep papers and to jot dot thoughts when we are in the planning phases of our projects. Pocket Charts and hooks will hold our flashcards, sentence strips, and diagrams as we create. Once a project is designed, we can begin using construction paper, markers, scissors, crayons, and paint. These creative mediums help us to construct such projects as volcanoes, vision boards, timelines, and to accent other visual works.
What begins as construction paper, crayons, and paint later becomes a creation of grandeur that illustrates not only a students creativity, but also their understanding.
