Help me give my students an opportunity to ROCK OUR SCHOOL and celebrate National Chocolate Day as we learn and practice non-fiction reading and writing standards.
My classroom is full of fifth graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, but I also have a diverse group of learners. I have students functioning well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students functioning well above grade level. I have students who have a passion for learning, and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
This is my third year teaching 5th grade. One thing I have noticed as I teach these pre-teens in my class is their learning is at an optimum level when they are engaged in the learning process. Last year I was able to transform my room into Decimal Diner, a basketball stadium, a winter wonderland, and a music studio. When my room was transformed into an alternative learning environment I noticed the excitement and engagement of my students increase. My students were able to learn and practice rigorous standards in an alternative environment that added a little novelty and fun to our classroom.
This year I would like to magically transform my room into a chocolate factory for National Chocolate Day and into a rock concert for Rock Your School Day.
The books, Who is Milton Hershey, and What is Rock and Roll will be used to teach and practice non-fiction reading and writing standards in our transformed classroom while the other materials will be used to set the stage for engagement.
More than half of students from low‑income households
