Set Learning in Motion

I teach first grade at P.S.169, a title one school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. My class is made up of 17 English language learners who represent five different languages and nine different countries. The children learn English through reading, writing, math and science. Whenever possible I try to use pictures, outings or concrete objects to help the students grasp abstract concepts. I have tried to create science experiments to help answer children's wonderings. Recently, the children and I have been experimenting with movement and motion. My students have wonderful insight, but they are not always able to verbally explain what they are thinking, and many of their ideas get lost in the translation. I would like to provide for my students some of the LEGO sets: the early simple machine set, the early structure set and the gears set. I believe that these simple, educational and entertaining models would give children a way to explore and express their ideas about motion. I believe that these Legos could generate many discussions, both throughout our classroom motion unit, as well as throughout the year in the student's "choice" time. These resources would allow my students new opportunities to explore and experiment in a hands on way, and set new learning in motion.
