Service Learning Project: Application of Taxonomy and GIS

My students need stable Aluminum Arboretum Tags, nails, springs, and arboretum stakes for our Service Learning Project of identifying, naming mapping of the native and introduced plants in our school campus.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Richard's classroom raised $1,442

This project is fully funded

My Students

The adage, "Today's students - tomorrow's leaders" empowers students to actively collaborate with some community members in the Service Learning Project. They shared the vision of applying what they have learned to real world problem. I value the vital role of school stakeholders' active involvement in the development of my students. Educating and molding our young adults is indeed a shared responsibility. In Hawaii, family means "ohana" which does not only pertain to immediate family but also the extended family members or even community members. Amidst the challenges brought by the eruption of Kilauea volcano, our community has come together and brings out the best in us, as "ohana."

My school is a Title I school where students are culturally diverse.

About 80% of the students commute from an outlying area of 112 square miles to the campus. School data shows that the percentage of students who receive free and reduced priced meals continues to increase each year. Due to the type of community we have, our school is eligible for federal funding for free lunch and transportation this academic year. Likewise, my students love to do hands on activities, service learning project and the application of 21st century skills

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will provide the last few screws to finish up our Service Learning Project. Last semester, we started the inventory, identification, naming and mapping of the various plant species around campus. Likewise, we commit to finish the project this school year with your support. The 100 Arboretum tags will serve as identification nameplates with common (Hawaiian, English, etc) and scientific names, short description and QR code. The aluminum nails, stainless steel springs and stakes will make the nameplates stable, user friendly, and will provide aesthetic perspectives too.

The interactive arboretum tags will showcase the beauty of plant diversity in our school campus, will facilitate authentic and relevant learning experience, will promote appreciation and accountability, thus will fuel up future initiatives for sustainability.

This initiative will also provide interactive self guided, class or community educational journey using their smartphones. This project has interdisciplinary dimension which can be tied to the Next Generation Standards. Likewise. it will also provide opportunity to engage learning and apply learned concepts and skills outdoor.

Likewise, this Service Learning Project will also provide students and other school stakeholders the opportunity to browse and explore the link to the school website with pictures of all the plants identified and mapped. The QR code on the arboretum tags will make their visit interactive and engaging. Furthermore, this initiative will provide learning opportunities to all the participants of this project to develop awareness of the native and introduced plants species, showcase their photography skills, GIS mapping skills, taxonomic skills, and collaborative skills. In the future, the community will be able to use the school campus as a venue for ecological and botanical learning experience. Therefore, funding our service learning project will make a positive difference not just to my kids but also to our community!
