This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is home to some of the most independent, hard-working teenagers I have ever met! The majority of our students are at risk learners and students with special needs; many of whom are living below the poverty line. Students are primarily Latino, including some whom are English language learners. They are high school students in an early college setting preparing themselves to enter the world as young adults. Our school is a safe zone, full of caring individuals who treat our student body as family. Our school is a consortium school, empowering students through multiple modes of learning and exploration.
Students at our school are natural born leaders and out-of-the box thinkers.

My Project
Students from our high school will travel to the northern part of the Dominican Republic to collaborate with a local school community.
In Cabarete, Dominican Republic, our high school students will work for a week at an elementary school teaching writing, English, and sign language to students.
Students will design and execute a series of murals with students from the school community as a way to beautify their space. Students from our high school will participate in workshops before the trip takes off to deepen their understanding of the work they will do.
For many of our students, this is their first time leaving the country. We will make it an experience of a lifetime as they partake in service learning with a community in need!
