This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The majority of my students are at risk learners and students with special needs; many of whom are living below the poverty line. Students are primarily latino, including some who are English Language Learners. They are high school students in an early college setting preparing themselves to enter the world as young adults. Our school is a safe zone, full of caring individuals who treat our student body as family. Our school is a consortium school, empowering students through multiple modes of learning and exploration.
Students at our school are natural born leaders and out-of-the box thinkers.

My Project
This year, our school started a student government named the House of Representatives. This group of 25 students serves as a voice for the student body and plans and executes service learning initiatives within the school and the greater New York City community. It is our vision to start an international travel program, starting with this amazing group of student leaders. Our first stop will be to the Dominican Republic to collaborate with the DREAM Project and provide students in elementary school an opportunity to work with our students. Both groups of children include students with disabilities and deaf children. We are excited to join forces and have an amazing and collaborative week together in which we will introduce the youth to the Dominican Republic and through workshops, bridge the divide between countries and empowering our youth through visual arts and writing.
